When this W.J. Jeffery .404 Mauser came to us, it was little more than a parts gun. It had had the original action and bottom metal removed, but still had the original bolt. A poorly fitting and extremely badly engraved action was present, but not worth saving. An oversized magazine box had been inlet into the wood, so a standard replacement would not fit. We had to source an appropriate action for the project, and have bottom metal custom made.
|The barrel had to be cut back in order to time properly, then be rechambered and have the extractor slot recut.|
We had the action and floorplate engraved to match the original pattern on the barrel.
The engraving was beautifully done by Charles Lee.
The new bottom metal was custom made by Duane Weibe to fit the oversized relief in the stock. As a result, the rifle now holds four rounds in the magazine, instead of the original three.
An Oberndorf trigger bow was welded to Duane's magazine box.
|The stock had to be stripped of its finish, carefully sanded, and completely refinished with an appropriate hand rubbed oil finish.|
